Guidelines for the use of Electronic Performance Monitoring

Electronic performance monitoring (EPM), is rapidly increasing in popularity. As EPM becomes normalized, managers must face the challenge of implementing these advanced technological systems in ways that best serve both the organization and employees. In this article, published in Organizational Dynamics,  we offer a practical guide for any manager thinking about using or already using EPM. We address the following questions: How prevalent are these technologies? What are the legal constraints on EPM use? How does EPM affect workers? What factors influence these effects? We conclude with recommendations for useing EPM effectively.
